Sony has finally resolved the supply issues for the PlayStation 5 and the proof is in the pudding – or rather its financial report for the last three months of 2022. The company sold 7.1 million PS5 consoles, a massive increase from the 3.9 million it managed a year prior.

This boosted the Games & Network Services revenue to JPY 1,246 billion, up from JPY 813 billion for the same period in 2021 – a massive 53% increase. Even more telling is that the bulk of the sales came from hardware rather that digital content like the year ago quarter (game sales are up as well).

In total, Sony has sold 32.1 million PlayStation 5s since launch (up from 25 million total in November). Its goal is to reach 37 million by the end of its fiscal quarter (which ends in March, not December). The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers went down, but the number of Monthly Active Users is up slightly.

Here’s a look at game sales, focused on the top performance past and present. God of War Ragnarok for the PS5 sold 11 million copies. Note: look at the number in the brackets on the right, that is the number of days since release when the particular sales milestone was achieved.

Of course, Sony has other divisions, music, for example. Harry Styles, Beyonce and SZA topped the charts in the last quarter of 2022. Sony makes movies too, though revenue and income were down that quarter.

Sales of image sensors were up and Sony increased production capacity compared to the same period in 2021. The company predicts lower unit sales for the next quarter, which will be “partially offset by an improvement in the product mix”, i.e. selling more expensive sensors on average.

There was something else too, what was it? Right, phones! Unfortunately, it’s not good news – during the last three months of 2022 the Mobile Communications division took in JPY 93 billion, down from JPY 102 billion for the same period in 2021.
